What makes dolphins different than fish though? Why is there so much more response to this and not the billions and billions of fish killed each year, is it because they’re mammals? Because fish aren’t smart? This is horrible, they should at very least be killed humanely.
You should see OUR slaughterhouses. Its just as bad. If you have a problem with this, go vegan, otherwise you can’t say a thing.
And yes, I think this is horrible, but you are out of line to say that japan has no respect for wildlife. You should say “humanity has no respect for wildlife”.
Sadly I have to agree with both Neko and JJJ. It’s not only the Japanese who have a hand in the inhumane slaughtering of animals, look at the process of killing chickens, very cruel and present in western countries as well. I think that we shouldn’t let the Japanese “scientific” whaling cloud our perception as to the reality of the slaughtering process present throughout the entire world.
Although I do agree with the fact that the human race is to blame it is very sad to see noble creatures being treated in this manner. I have to also agree with the fact that Asian culture in general have little respect for mammals and aquatic life. What to see other items truly disturbing from this part of the planet check out http://www.peta.org/. This a very shameful aspect of human nature. Respect nothing and take everything, then blame everything else except for our selves for the destruction of the plane and in the end our selves.
i agree with Kev, however there is something weird in all of this issue. What about plants? do vegans think about the life conditions o carrots, or bananas? just because they don´t scream they live pretty much as cows and chickens. I guess that while we continue producing more than we really need, we will continue to grow as a population and continue to use Nature as a mere warehouse… if any living thing is seen as an object of human use, than a dolphin will be no different than a brick….
Mmm, Dolphin. I bet it tastes great. It’s them or me, and I choose me. If I have to survive I’m eating a fucking dolphin. Animals are on this planet for our nourishment.
Hugo – I’m a vegan, the difference is, carrots and bananas don’t have “a mind” or intelligence. They do not live as cows and chickens. Cows and chickens you can “interact” with. They have emotions (funny story there, brightish person moved over to our school from south africa, considering his intelligence it was surprising when he said about animals not having emotions. Bah, you had to be there)
Do carrots and bananas roll around the floor in agony after having their necks slit, but not enough to kill them instantly?
Although there is ethical implications with farming vegetables (i.e pesticides damaging the surrounding area, eg damaging an eco system in a nearby river), you can only do so much, focus on so much, and hope that others start to act nicer.
It’s sad that people don’t care.
It’s sad people/governments don’t apply much pressure.
i think this kinda stuff is wrong but ill eat the meat and ill slaughter the animal if i need to eat. The thing here is this isnt a pointless slaughter this is a slaughter to feed there country… hate it er not what you gonna do bout it? Im really tired of reading so much bitchin and alot less action revolt mother fuckers! if your not a part of the solution your part of the fuckin problem
and heres something to make you think if theres not a thing around but 150 people and a loaf of bread and your family is starving what you gonna do? kill or be killed?
The way they kill animals is torture, what they should do is kill them as fast as possible. It is the cycle of life to kill and eat but damn, humans should have a little more compassion considering we are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. It’s sad how little consideration we have toward the lesser animal.
Yes it is absolutely horrible but Gill you can’t just dump on an entire country for it. There are a lot of other issues tied up in this that we need to take into consideration if we want to solve this issue. Defaming a nation does nothing positive.
Difference in killing a dolphin and a fish(ex. salmon)? Dolphins have the intelligence of an 8 year old human. They’re the only animals on earth that have their own language through sound. Dolphins, elephants, primates all have intelligence comparable to humans. They mourn their own deads and each have their own emotions and personality. Not just these animals but we are finding that more and more animals are smarter than what we humans/society believes. We also can’t say the japanese are cruel, it’s human beings/society that is cruel. If the japanese are cruel for killing dolphins and whales, then what’s Hitler/George W Bush/Stalin? All of the above were responsible for killing countless humans including babies.
come on people the killing houses in NA are at the very least that much more humain. they shoot the creatures in the brain before starting the work on them, that was just crualty, plus are not dolphins the creatures who have an IQ of a grade 5 student, in short they are sentient, you cant think you would do that to a child can you really do that to a dolphin
This is really sad, but the good news is that this video is very old and the Japanese government has actually banned this type of slaughter. However, I’m sure it still goes on, but the government is trying to stop these illegal activities.
Let’s not be ignorant and label Asians as the culprits though. As someone has already mentioned, Americans are just as guilty with the handling of livestock. Chickens, pigs, cows, goose, and many other animals are treated in equally inhumane ways for food. Just look up how we get foie gras and you’ll see how we are just as guilty as anyone else.
If dolphins are so smart, why don’t they stay away from Japan? ;)
And please, don’t spread this peta bullshit around. They play on the emotions of humans to gain a following and eventually they are no better than the people they claim are “a poor excuse for human”.
In many of these small Japanese villages, whales, fish, and dolphins have been the only means for them to survive for centuries. Many of them are doing what their father did before him, and his father before him, ect. Take this away from them, and what will they have?
There should be a difference between killing dolphins and cattle and chickens
the only reason 95% of the cows and chickens are even alive in the first place is because we bread them to eat. Which yes i can see as cruel. But dolphins are the second smartest creatures on the planet and were captured out of the wild and deserved more respect and stronger laws against this type of shit, agree?
I understand with the growth of our population that yes, we have to slaughter many animals to keep up with demand.
But I don’t understand the reasoning behind the most absolute cruel way of murdering these animals. And this isn’t the first I’ve seen from disgusting Japan. Like they have no conscious or souls. How can you be so disrespectful to a living being?
I’d love to cut one of those f*cking fishermans head off with one machettes and watch him die. is it so hard to PUT A F*CKING BULLET OR 2 IN THEIR HEADS BEFORE YOU SLAUGHTER THEM!?
If I didn’t already know that the Japanese have one of the most demented and reprehensible cultures on the planet I would have been shocked by this. As it is this just adds another reason why I will never go anywhere near Japan.
Any society where rape fantasies are the norm rather than harbored by social outcasts is sub-human, in my opinion. Yeah, I said it; the Japanese social structure has dehumanised them, broken all of their minds.
(And anyone that reads that and disagrees, understand that I won’t agree with you or your argument under any circumstance and please save your own time by not responding to it.)
This is a sad video. It is sickining because governments let this inhuman thing to happen. Today people go to the supermarket and buy meat. Yet has anyone of them actually see how the animal was killed. NO. I wonder how many people could stomach that if they wittnessed it. I’ll admit i am a bow-hunter and hunt deer, but i respect the deer, dont let it suffocate. i strongly disagree with japan in killing these intelligent animals, but its is all around the world. i think it is better to go kill animals in the wild, then to kill them in factorys and spawning grounds. The worst killer is you! Every time you throw your trash on the street it ends up in the ocean. Millions of animals die everyday because of envirmental distruction.
Its sickening watching those dolphins bleed to death slowly, Dolphins should not be caught at all but if they are then there must be a more humane way to kill the dolphin. The people in that video seemed like they enjoyed it, taking there time slitting there stomachs and letting them convulse in pain. It s disgusting and I have to agree with Dionysus, these people are disgusting.
I can see the point that Proxy made about these small villages need to live off the sea but he cannot defend how they are caught and hacked to death with no remorse.

the japanese should be rounded up and done in just like they do the dolphins, the dolphins are probably smarter than the japanese even. this makes me sick,
THIS IS SO INHUMAN. FROM WHAT I KNOW THE MORE IQ YOU HAVE THE MORE PAIN U FEEL. THE AVERAGE HUMAN IQ IS 98. A DOLPHIN HAS A 56 IQ. IT FEELS AS LEAST 17 TIMES THE PAIN A CHICKEN OR A COW FEELS. AND A DOLHPIN HAS FISH SKIN AFTER ALL IT LIVES UNDERWATER ITS UNKOWN TO CUTS AND ALL THE BULLHSIT THESE FLAT EYED BASTARDS ARE BRINGING UPON THEM. AND EVEN IF U DONT TAKE THE PHYSICAL PAIN IN CONSIDERATION REMEMBER A DOLPHIN HAS A PERSONALITY UNLIKE OTHER FISH. WHAT ABOUT THEIR FAMILY WHO ARNT CAUGHT YET AND SEE THEM GET A PEICE OF IRON THROUGH THEIR BODY’S.
whoever thinks that this is okay and not a big deal is a disgusting pig. “julius” u are a pig, there are so many other things on this planet to eat and get nourishment from. dolphins are fricken endangered or were once endangered.
It’s funny how random idiots feel the need to hate on other people’s cultures without first examining their own.
As other have said, Japan isn’t the only country that slaughters animals. It isn’t the only country that treats animals poorly and inhumanely. it isn’t the first and it certainly will not be the last.
As for the culture itself, all cultures have good and bad aspects. In terms of the rape fantasies, I would really like to know where it says that this is the norm because it sounds like the ramblings of a racist moron. Such fantasies are present in all cultures, not just Japaneses or other Asian cultures. Alot of the classic films have emphasis on a man forcing himself onto a woman only for her to later realize that she actually wanted it. This is not so much done anymore, but watch Gone with the Wind for reference. It certainly wasn’t uncommons back then.
Now with regards to the dolphins, it is sad how they die. However, the fact that they are intelligent doesn’t deter from the fact that they are food. And let’s face it, if dolphins were dumb and ugly creatures, I doubt this would be much of a discussion.
Also, he whole concept of resptect for a creature is nonsense. I very much doubt that the animal cares about the respect he is getting when he has a bullet in his head. You are one to talk about respecting animals if you are hunting for sport. Sure, you may eat the animal later, but you didn’t hunt it to eat it, you hunted it for sport. I would much rather see someone brutally murder an animal to eat than gracefull kill it for sport.
This entry certainly has drawn on many passionate responses. While I do agree with the arguments of of needing to eat and supplying food to a growing population, I think the point has been missed. This article was looking at the inhumane method of slaughter as opposed to just killing of dolphins in general. I also believe that as an omnivorous species, meat eating is part of our general diet and survival. However, that said, I think humans are of the intelligence as to decide how we go about meeting those demands whilst still being compassionate to the species around us. We are definitely one strand in the web of ecosystems that cover our planet, needing to eat and survive like every other species, but we have the capability of opportunity to innovate and rise above mindless slaughter like the bear who catches his salmon. In doing so we can make the greatest difference to our planet and define ourselves as a species by setting ourselves apart from the norms of predatory behaviour as mentioned above.
I am not a vegetarian and not what you would call a treehugger. But these practises have to stop. Dolphines are highly developed creatures but they are still easy for humans to kill without big moral objections because they don’t look like humans so much (unlike apes).
@ Proxy
“In many of these small Japanese villages, whales, fish, and dolphins have been the only means for them to survive for centuries. Many of them are doing what their father did before him, and his father before him, ect. Take this away from them, and what will they have?”
This is not true, their father might accidently have caught a dolphin while aiming to catch fish (no, a dolphin is not a fish). But they didn’t use boats and sonar equipment to catch more dolphins than they need to eat themselves.
If these small villages can’t live anymore by being normal fisherman or by living like their ancesters used to do than their government should find a solution for that problem. Japan is rich enough, and letting them kill nearly extincted dolphins is not a solution. Dolphin and whale meat are not neccesary to feed the population, these animals are killed to provide luxury products. Actually, by killing these animals the condition of the sea is being disturbed and that affects the ammount of fish negatively. And therefor killing whales and dolphins lowers the ammount of available food and raises the price of it.
Dolphins are quite possibly smarter than us. Just because we are good at killing does not make us intelligent. Just the opposite actually. We are easily manipulated, corrupted and controlled because of our self centered greed. Slipknot said it correctly. People = shit. Maybe some day we will care about something other than ourselves. There is no excuse for many things that we do all over the world.
You gotta look at the bottom line. What incentive does the people in japan or any nation for that matter to set up an infastructure that will humanely slaughter animals for consumption. Think of it in a business aspect which is sad but true thats the way the world works. Why would one company raise their costs and lower their profits just to kill an animal humanely when just cutting their throats and waiting for them to die is virtually free. 90% of people in developed countries do not care how and where their hamburgers or dolphin meat comes from. Its easier to just think it grows on trees. For the people that go thats how the world works the weak get eaten and blah blah blah… you are veryyy ignorant your basically associating the environmental impact of 6 billion people that have the technology to wipe out all species to a tiger that only eats what ever it can catch. Since we have the power to do such destruction our only hope is to use it responsibly. But there will always be people that dont see the greater good and only think of themselves.
Yes I do agree that this is the circle of life BUT and there is a big but and that is the respect for animals. Dolphins are very clever animals and it is obvious that we do have a lot more empathy for a dolphin than pigs that don’t even share the same freedom as the dolphins. However it is wrong because Dolphins as other water mammals including the Whale are very clever animals and we should treat them with mutual respect. They have a much more sophisticated awareness of their surrounding. As clever animals with clear social patterns they are even used in therapy to help us. This shows how close these animals actually are to us. That’s why we have international agreements to end this sort of cruelty. Oh and by the way it is National Dolphin Year
“Any society where rape fantasies are the norm rather than harbored by social outcasts is sub-human, in my opinion.”
Funny, then, that all you hippies thing all other forms of perversion and deviance are just fine, and have even supported a fascist campaign to ostracize all people in the US who think differently. The whole world should just think like you – and anyone who doesn’t you should kill or lock up. That’s freedom!
This made me really sad :(
But you can go insulting the Japanese because of this, all countries treat animals in bad ways, and no im not vegi or vegan, but i still think its wrong how animals are treated for food, and i really wouldn’t be bothered if they stopped selling meat in total.
:( I think its wrong allowing an animal to have a slow painful death, if your going to kill something for food, at least make it quick and as little painful for the animal :(
I’m from the caribbean, and in the caribbean dolphins are also killed, i do not see why everyone is alarm about japan, chickens have to be killed and the other fish in the ocean to be prepared.
Just thought would contribute my share in this much heated debate… Mr. Hugo… brother I do respect your benevolence towards nature but the plants and eco-agricultural system was solely created for the survival of us HUMANS and other living beings. I come from a Hinduism background… and from what I have explored even other cultures promote a vegetarian philosophy with the exception that you are allowed to eat meat for your survival if you don’t find anything else. My personal perspective is very simple… “if no one kills you to survive…you have no right to kill anyone else for your pleasure”
This video is just gathering sympathy from viewers as others have stated that animals are killed and consumed in even more cruel and pathetic manners…
Yeah, let’s bunch all of Japan together and assume that everyone in Japan is A-OK with this, and they’re proud of what the people in this video do, as there aren’t veterinarians, animal rights activists and people with common sense in Japan.
This is an unseeable cruelty. It represents the callous mindset. Such cruelty against animals like dolphins by people belonging to any nation, race, or community breeds violence amongst those very perpetrators of the horrible crime. It permannently destroys the ecology of mother earth. Oh GOD, please help us to survive and punish the criminals anyway you deem fit!
No wonder why the rest of the world thinks Japan is the worlds ASS (ARSE) nothing but shit comes out of it, and before you say this is not the only country the slaughter animals in inhumanly look at Iraq with there beef. Dolphin does nothing to hurt the food chain. No wonder why your country is over populated no other country want you..
IN RESPONSE TO ARGUMENTS OF ‘SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST…
Humans, yes, are the dominant species on the planet and as such we may shape it to our will. Nevertheless, we have something all the other species on earth don’t have- and that’s rational choice. We know 1) from our own conscious experience feeling pain is a bad thing, which we would attempt to avoid; 2) in creatures that have well developed nervous systems (most animals) feel pain; 3) killing animals, using prolonged methods, generally results in extreme pain.
Put all three together and you get the result killing animals using prolonged methods results in their feeling extreme pain, and is something that should be avoided, if the animals’ interests are to be respected even in the most minimalistic way.
(By the way- a lack of ability to empathize with pain experienced by animals is a classical sign of a psychopath)
So, regardless of whether we are the most powerful or dominant species on earth, evolutionary advantage doesn’t absolve us of our ethical responsibilty to use reason. If we were to neglect this capacity, would we be really anymore than animals ourselves?
Further- is it “natural” to eat meat? I would argue no- it is natural to eat foods that meet your daily nutritonal requirements, not necessarily to eat meet. If you could not meet your protein requirements in any fashion other than the eating of meat, perhaps there are good grounds for eating animals. However, as it stands human populations (at least in the developed world) are more than capable of meeting their protein requirements (and other dietary needs) without meat. So really, one’s choice to eat meat is a decision to indulge tastes and preferences at the expense of an animal’s life.
That said, I myself am not a vegetarian, but at least I acknowledge what my choices to eat meat mean. Also, choosing to buy organic produce often (but not always) means more humane methods of slaughter are used and the animals enjoy a greater quality of life while they are alive. Plus, you get the health benefits by avoiding additives, animal antibiotics, genetically modified products etc.
Finally, the attitude that “Animals are on this planet for our nourishment” is possibly the most arrogant I’ve ever encountered. This world, and the creatures alive on it, belongs to no one, and does not exist to serve anybody’s particular purpose. We have no right, as such, to exploit the natural world for our own purposes- we just choose to do so anyway. Life on earth is the result of universal luck- and as such people need to learn to appreciate the fact we are just as lucky to be here as the rest.
P.S. Anyone interested in finding out exactly how many aspects of our lives contribute to animal cruelty/needless death (and the amount is bound to surprise you), I recommend the book ‘Animal Liberation’ by ethicist Peter Singer- written many years ago, but still highly relevant.
Absolutely bestial! Japan has no respect for any animal life. I have never seen such cruelty…it has made me weep.
What makes dolphins different than fish though? Why is there so much more response to this and not the billions and billions of fish killed each year, is it because they’re mammals? Because fish aren’t smart? This is horrible, they should at very least be killed humanely.

….no, wait
(don’t make me play my I-live-in-Tokyo-card)
This is an unseeable cruelty. It represents the callous mindset. Such cruelty against animals like dolphins by people belonging to any nation, race, or community breeds violence amongst those very perpetrators of the horrible crime. It permannently destroys the ecology of mother earth. Oh GOD, please help us to survive and punish the criminals anyway you deem fit!
“Humane” “Inhumane” I’m beggining to think there is no difference.
We are animals. Being the most intelligent we know of in existence. With that comes responsibility.
We need to eat as all animals do. A “fish” being eaten by a “bear” has no option of doing it quickly and painlessly. We do.
sick ****s. what kind of people do a job like this and get paid for it?
b*st*rds. …. we should round them and do the same to them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
those of you who care, please join green peace and the wild wildlife foundation so we can make a difference. The more people the louder our voice.
the rest of you, sit there, preach, and do what you were born to do…do nothing and die eventually
