All it needs to do is change the system so that more carbon is added to the atmospheric pool than is removed from it each year. It's just a matter of tipping the scales... and the additional carbon added to the atmosphere also makes the ocean more acidic, which leads to fun things like coral bleaching and other adverse impacts on our world's oceans. Even without global warming, the threat to the ocean ecosystem is still significant.
