In the final chapter of Covance’s efforts to bar PETA Europe from publicizing video footage of animal abuse inside a Covance facility, Covance has complied with a court order by paying PETA Europe 145,000 to cover legal fees and costs.
Shortly after PETA U.S. went public with an 11-month investigation that documented appalling physical and psychological abuse of monkeys inside a Covance laboratory in Vienna, Virginia, Covance sought an injunction to prevent PETA Europe from showing the shocking video footage. In 2005, a U.K. judge dismissed that case, characterizing the video as highly disturbing. The judge also commented on the rough manner in which the animals [are] handled and the bleakness of the surroundings in which they are kept, matters that he said cry out for explanation.
In contrast to the abuse uncovered by PETA U.S., Covance’s Animal Welfare Statement claims that the company treats the animals in its facilities with care and respect. The judge called the difference between Covance’s claim and the reality exposed by the PETA U.S. investigation a comparison between two different worlds, and he went on to say that to the extent that Covance has fostered a misleading impression, PETA Europe is entitled to correct it publicly.
In the U.S., Covance’s censorship attempts also failed when it had to withdraw motions for both a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction, which were aimed at preventing PETA U.S. from showing the video. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited and fined Covance for serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act, and activists in Chandler, Arizona, have fought Covance’s proposed construction of a new animal-testing facility tooth and nail, giving the billion-dollar conglomerate a run for its money.
Covance is notorious for animal abuses as well as blatant lies to the public. They have had outbreaks of Ebola and TB at several of their facilities here in the US, yet they attempt to say they are safe. Covance likes to say they “help bring cures to market”, yet, since NO drug has ever CURED a disease, that is also misleading and false.
Covance is a contract animal testing lab who will test anything for money. They do NOT care about your health….just their own bottom line.
Peta’s video should be mandatory viewing for ALL people in ALL nations so they can see what really goes on behind the closed doors of animal testing labs. Then, they should educate themselves as to the useless reality of the results and the MUCH BETTER alternatives that are presently available that actually DO provide relevant results.
while no drug has cured a disease many have helped, insulin which helps millions of diabetics live each year was devolped by animal testing many medical procedures such as heart tyransplants were first tested on animals, the arguement that there are other ways are simply untrue while animal testing is not 100% reliable it is currently the most effective means of testing for scientists out there. Who have lets not forget devolped thousands of drugs and treaments which have enchanced the living standard of people everwhere.
why should PETA be banned?? These videos are for the people who still think that animal cruelty is no longer existing. With out these cruel videos it doesn’t let the people know what’s still happening to these creatures. We need help and support, and banning PETA from Europe is not the way to get our support. People have the right to know what’s happeing to these animals, and without PETA, we would have almost no clue. I read up and watch videos on PETA’s sight almost every week. It’s very interesting and knowlegable to know that people are inhumane, and hurt these animals.
SUPPORT PETA!!!!!
